Each top level domain has it’s own set of rules dictating who can register a name.
  The following guidelines are not
comprehensive by any means, but are
intended to give you a brief guide to domain name registration. If in doubt, please
email us with your enquiry at

Internet law is not for the faint hearted.
If you are in any doubt whether registering a
name will put you in breech of copyright or
  trademark regulations, please contact an
         independent legal advisor.

There are a set of dispute policy guidelines (published by ICANN)
which can help you if you feel that a domain name which you are
entitled to is being used illegally by someone else.

The only valid characters for use in a domain name are letters, numbers and a
hyphen (-). Characters such as !, _, ~ etc are not allowed as they are used by
                   internet application software routines.

This domain name range is used by UK companies and individuals. The names are registered on a first come, first served basis, but any name registered should reflect your actual company name, or you should be able to provide proof that you are operating under an approximation of the required domain name.

These domain suffixes are controlled by Internic, and although typically
used by American companies, are intended to signify an international domain.

These domains are controlled by CentralNIC as an alternative to
.co.uk names. They are issued on a first come  first served basis.

Domain Names are becoming increasingly important and valuable business
assets and you must be aware of your responsibilities to not register names which may infringe upon another company’s trademarks or other intellectual
property.

If you feel you have a right to a domain name which has been registered by another
company or individual, most ISP’s (including Names And Space), follow the
uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, as approved by ICANN on
October 24, 1999.  You can find this policy here

Names And Space will not enter into any legal or other communication relating
to a domain name dispute unless requested to do so under the ICANN policy.
